The week ahead: Lost in a maze of questions
Conrad Astley28/ 4/2006
WHAT is the creature that lurks in the middle of the island? Who
are The Others? Why are those numbers inscribed on a hatch in the
middle of the jungle? And where does that hatch lead? If these
questions mean anything at all to you, you'll no doubt be looking
forward to the return of
Lost (Tuesday, Channel
4). If not, I'd give it a wide berth.
The second series is full of mysteries and sets out to ask more
questions than it answers.
Of course, another question worth asking is - where, on a deserted
tropical island, have our protagonists found a beauty parlour to
ensure they still have white teeth and immaculate hair?
We see the return of some old friends in
Doctor Who
(Saturday, BBC1) too.
David Tennant has already proved himself as more than worthy of
filling Christopher Eccleston's shoes, but this week's episode is
designed to appeal to die-hard fans, and parents watching with
their kids.
The Doctor and Rose find those old 70s sidekicks, robot dog K-9 and
former assistant Sarah Jane Smith, working in a modern
comprehensive where there's something more sinister going on than
an OFSTED inspection.
Events that brought Bradford to its knees in the summer of 2001 are
retold in a drama.
Bradford Riots (Thursday, Channel 4) tells the
story through the eyes of one Asian family. Karim is a promising
university student, while his brother Faisal runs the family
textile shop. However, things change when Karim gets involved in
the violent tensions that eventually escalate into a full-blown
riot.
With the National Front and the BNP still active in Bradford, the
drama had to be filmed in Liverpool, with extras bussed over from
Oldham and Manchester.
Five years does not seem a long enough gap to wait before
attempting to bring these horrific events on to the screen.
New sitcom
Suburban Shootout (Thursday, Five)
offers a lighter alternative, with its bizarre plot about a
housewives' turf war.
