Exhibition takes a pop at rock art
by Conrad Astley7/ 7/2005
MANCHESTER is now host to two exhibitions by world-renowned rock
photographers.
The Northern Quarter's Richard Goodall Gallery is holding the UK's
first exhibition of portraits by former Rolling Stone snapper Mark
Seliger, while four decades of British photographer Jane Bown's
work is on display at The Lowry.
New York-based Seliger, who now works for GQ and Vanity Fair, has
shot musicians such as Kurt Cobain, John Lee Hooker and Lenny
Kravitz over his lengthy career.
The Platinums exhibition will also feature many of his photographs
of actors such as Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, Julia Roberts and
Drew Barrymore.
Along with the collection of black and white pictures, there are
also colour shots of Jennifer Aniston posing as a Greek goddess and
Johnny Depp at the piano.
The photographer, who published a two-year project documenting
Holocaust survivors, will also be displaying evocative shots of
ground zero, taken just after September 11 attacks.
An exhibition of Jane Bown's work has just opened at The
Lowry.
Rock, a retrospective collection, dates back to her shots of the
Beatles from 1963, and is brought up to date by a photograph of
Manchester's Doves taken earlier this year.
Jane's career began in 1949 when her first photograph, of
philosopher Bertrand Russell, appeared in The Observer when she was
21.
The collection will also feature shots of Keith Richards, David
Bowie, Pete Townsend, Bjork, Sinead O'Connor and Boy George, as
well as a rare shot of John Lennon from 1967 and a picture of U2
from 1987 - believed to be the only reason Bono agreed to a high
profile newspaper interview - and a picture of Morrissey from
1995.
One of her former editors said Jane "must be a bit of a white
witch, she really can see into people's souls" but she had a more
down to earth idea of what her craft entailed.
When The Queen, on awarding her an MBE in 1985, asked her what she
did for a living, Jane replied: "I'm a hack."
Rock is on at The Lowry until September 18 while the Mark
Seliger exhibition is being displayed at The Richard Goodall
Gallery in Thomas Street until July 27.
