Reliving Victorian fantasies

THE WORK of LS Lowry and the Victorian obsession with magic
lantern shows have provided the inspiration for a new
exhibition.
Phantasmagoria is one of several special features which has been
commissioned to celebrate The Lowry's fifth anniversary.
The installation, based in the Deck exhibition room at the arts
centre, has been created by Brass Art - artists Chara Lewis, Anneke
Pettican and Kristin Mojsiewicz.
The installation updates the work of LS Lowry, using the same views
he drew from the top floor of the Salford Technical College off
Chapel Street.
The artists have created a rotating video installation of the
city's skyline which is used as a backdrop.
A series of figures carrying out strange actions is projected
against this, while copper objects will also be silhouetted against
it, animated by light.
The installation is influenced by phantasmagoria, a Victorian
pastime in which artists would entertain guests with strange slide
shows they had created.
The experience will also feature a soundtrack specially composed by
Matt Wand and played on the glass armonica.
The instrument, included in Mozart's quintet in C minor, creates an
ethereal sound and is played by rubbing a series of glasses which
have been set into a frame, each one filled with a different amount
of water to tune its pitch.
Phantasmagoria is at the Lowry until June 26.
