All set for a good Knight
by Conrad Astley7/ 4/2005
BEVERLEY Knight has achieved the impressive feat of gaining
kudos in both the muso and r&b camps.
Her collaborations with artists like jazz legend Courtney Pine and
prime time tinkler Jools Holland have marked her out as a
respectable soul wailer, while pairings with the likes of Roni Size
and Wyclef Jean, and remixes by producers like Estelle, have seen
her gain dancefloor credibility.
Her impressive CV now includes a clutch of awards and nominations,
including the coveted Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award for best
r&b artist two years running.
Despite working with various writers on the album, including Robbie
Williams' scribe Guy Chambers, it is the most personal of her
career. And she also believes that, now in her 30s, she has had the
experience to hit her musical peak, as Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke and
Aretha Franklin were not able to carve their niches until they were
in that decade.
Her first album The B-Funk was released on independent Dome Records
in 1995. Although the album, which included the now-classic Flavour
of the Old School was a hit with critics, it was not a commercial
success and Beverley moved onto bigger things - namely a deal with
EMI. A breakthrough came with 1998's Prodigal Sista, but it was
2003's Who I Am that really projected her into the
mainstream.
The album went platinum, was voted by many as one of the year's
best releases, and contained hits like Shoulda Woulda Coulda and
Get Up.
Affirmation, featuring last year's rocky single Come As You Are as
well as the new dance hit Keep This Fire Burning, should see her
stellar ascent continue still further.
Academy,
Wednesday.
