THE BIG PICTURE: Self portrait

AN exhibition of 100 teenage self-portraits gives a unique insight into the many different identities, individual stories and cultures of teenage Britain today.

The pictures reveal a world more substantial than scallies versus moshers or McFly versus Green Day.

Teenagers show that they face feelings of isolation, pressures to conform and struggle to understand their emotions and life experiences.

Laurence, 14, from Gorton, has carefully constructed a digital image showing his love of fish.

His picture shows simply shows the hobby he loves.

While Najma, a pupil at Levenshulme High School, has created a montage of photographs.

The picture shows her clothes, religion and decorative hands to express her hopes for peace and a calm life.

She said: "My image includes my clothes, religion, decorative hands.

"The light side of my face in the middle is there because my dreams are full of colours and flowers.

"I hope for peace and a calm life.

"I see myself in my dreams struggling with everything special."

And Nimalesh from Wilmslow reveals his inner strength.

There is a boldness under a timid and shy exterior in his strikingly confident painting.

Self Portrait UK 14-19 is at Manchester Art Gallery from April 9 until June 26
