FESTIVAL: New Islington Festival, Ancoats, Sat 6 Sep

WITH most music festivals, there’s a strong emphasis on an old-fashioned, back-to-nature approach – think big, grassy fields and a hippyish return to the great outdoors.

However, Manchester’s New Islington Festival – now in its third year – is designed to celebrate urban development and modern advancement. As the name suggests, it was conceived to highlight Manchester’s lush New Islington district. Based in Ancoats, the recently redeveloped area has received plenty of financial investment in order to make it attractive to the city’s hip, young professionals.

It’s easy to be cynical and dismiss New Islington festival as one big property advert but, in fairness, it’s an event with plenty of true community spirit. In the past three years, it has prospered by involving and encouraging the best of Manchester’s creative DIY underground. With something to offer everyone, New Islington Festival promises food stalls, arts and crafts and poetry readings, with the main centrepiece being the music stage.

Showcasing the best of Manchester’s folk music talent, you can expect to see the likes of Katie Ware, The Mouse Outfit and songwriter Jessie Rose, the latter being tipped to be Manchester’s answer to Amy Winehouse.

Kicking off at 2pm, the whole event is free and healthily promotes a family, child-friendly atmosphere. New Islington might be an unfamiliar area to many of us, but while there are brilliant, eccentric little festivals like this, it will surely put its stamp on Manchester’s cultural map before long.
