CLUBBING: Moby, Sankeys Soap, Thurs 24 Jul

BY HIS own admission, Moby didn’t exactly fit the typical pop star mould.
A bald, neurotic mid-thirties New Yorker who was fond of environmental causes and veganism, Moby sounded more like a character from a Woody Allen film than a world-beating pop star.
But for a good few years, Moby really was the unsuspecting geek who infiltrated the pop world and relished every minute of it. Like an early precursor to Mark Ronson, Moby was a genuine jack of all musical trades – remixer, DJ, multi-instrumentalist, producer, socialite… while his songs were ubiquitous to the point of causing annoyance. From 2000 to 2002, you literally couldn’t switch on a TV or walk into a clothes shop without hearing a track from the star’s 10 million- selling Play album.
Moby has admitted to being ‘frightened’ by his over-exposure, which explains his long hiatus from public life in order to "reclaim his roots". Those origins lie in the hard techno clubs of the New York underground scene where he first made his name as a DJ, and have informed his latest album, the appropriately named Last Night.
Returning to the UK after his lengthy sabbatical, it’s his DJing skills that Moby seems most eager to display – the star will be performing what he describes as a ‘full-on, hands-in-the-air’ DJ set at Sankeys Soap.
