CULTURE: Hallé Taj Festival, Bridgewater Hall, Sat

THE Bridgewater Hall will be transformed in truly spectacular fashion when it hosts a special celebration of South Asian culture.
The Hall Taj Festival is part of the orchestra's 150th anniversary programme of events, and on Friday includes one of the world's greatest exponents of Indian stringed instrument the sarod. Ustad Wajahat Khan will perform his much-awaited world premiere of Concerto for Sarod and String Orchestra, which also features the exciting collaborative partnership of tabla player Bhupinder Singh Chaggar and saxophonist Jesse Bannister.
They will perform a joint composition called Freedom of the Soul and will be joined by Hall strings, sitar, santoor, accordion and Scottish harp.
On Saturday at 2pm, the festival will herald the first in a new monthly international series in the Barbirolli Room.
Music for the Mind and Soul is presented by Milapfest and includes celebrated sitar player Gaurav Mazumdar, and at 7.30pm, tabla star Ustad Zakir Hussain will help present a traditional repertoire of North Indian drumming along with the dazzling Dancing Drummers of Manipur.
The foyer will be decorated with exhibitions, food and events like dance displays, decorative saris, henna tattoos and face painting.
