MUSIC: Bon Jovi, City of Manchester Stadium, Sunday 22 June

IT DOESN'T take a genius to work out why Bon Jovi named their recent hits collection 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong.

They might be one of the biggest-selling rock bands on the planet, but Bon Jovi remain a soft target for critics and rock purists.

At worst, they’re a reminder of bloated Eighties rock; all big hair and big, cheesy clichés. At best, Bon Jovi are one of rock music’s ‘guilty pleasures’ – you can enjoy songs like Livin’ on a Prayer – but only if you’ve got your tongue lodged firmly in your cheek.

Not that the band’s hunky singer, Jon Bon Jovi, is bothered about being fashionable.

Over the course of an incredibly successful 24-year career, he’s prided Bon Jovi on being a real ‘People’s Band’.

They may have emerged in the superficial, rather comical ‘hair-metal’ movement of the Eighties (see also: Def Leppard, Motley Crue), yet Bon Jovi have always done their utmost to emphasise their earthy, working man roots.

As a lyricist, Jon Bon Jovi has always excelled with tales of small-town escape and blue-collar pride, and his band deliver rousing rock soundtracks to match.

Bon Jovi only have two types of song in their arsenal (power ballads and pop-metal anthems), but those songs belong solely in one environment – in massive stadiums for thousands of people to sing and perform air guitar to.

A guilty pleasure? Those 20,000 people who attend this weekend’s gig at City of Manchester Stadium can’t be wrong.

The 100,000,000 Bon Jovi fans Boxset was NOT a Hits collection. Most of the 50 songs included were previously unreleased. They have only released 1 proper greatest hits CD - Crossroads back in 1994. There was another greatest hits released in 2003 which featured acoustic versions of their big hits. And another thing - there was over 60,000 at the City of Manchester Gig on Sunday night - I WAS THERE!!
