MUSIC: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, The Apollo, Wednesday
29/ 4/2008
LED Zeppelin’s one-off comeback concert last December was unquestionably THE big rock’n’roll reunion of recent memory. Reviews of the gig were ecstatic in their praise, while reports suggest an astonishing 20 million people had all applied for tickets.
With such a feverish response, surely it would be a matter of time before Led Zeppelin reformed permanently?
Yet the answer appears to be a firm NO. The entire rock’n’roll universe might be screaming for a full-scale Led Zep reunion, but the band’s prickly frontman Robert Plant is determined to upset the script.
In recent interviews, Plant has rubbished plans for a full Led Zep reunion, insisting he’d rather concentrate on his other musical venture – a collaboration with country singer Alison Krauss.
It might seem a strange mix on paper – Led Zeppelin frontman collaborates with sweet country songstress – but Plant and Krauss is one of those ‘odd couple’ relationships which really sparkles despite the odds.
The pair’s recent album Raising Sand, was released last year to rave reviews, an album of old-fashioned bluegrass folk songs, in which the pair’s contrasting vocal styles blend to marvellous, stirring effect.
But we shouldn’t underestimate Krauss’ contribution in all this: in her homeland America, Krauss is regarded as one of the most distinguished female singers of her generation, a venerated country legend who released her first album at the tender age of 16, and still continues to enthral 20 years later.
So Robert Plant has rewritten the Led Zeppelin script much to the annoyance of heavy rock fans the world over. But alongside Alison Krauss, Plant is penning a fantastic new musical script which should surprise and delight in equal measure.
Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
