FESTIVAL: New Islington Festival, Old Mill Street, Ancoats, Saturday

31/ 8/2007

IF IT’S  a predictable music festival you want, New Islington isn’t really for you.

Billing itself as an ‘urban folk’ festival, it’s a cross-cultural gathering of underground hipsters, folk musicians, literary types and bohemians.

But most of all, it’s an event about taking you into the unknown – that being New Islington, the once-derelict area in Ancoats that is now going through something of a ‘hip’ regeneration process. The vibe is family-friendly, entry is free and the line-up seems intent on promoting all aspects of Manchester’s underground creative arts.

There’s an obvious focus on the city’s fertile new music scene with performances from the likes of Beep Seals, The Answering Machine and the excellent Carlis Star. But jostling alongside are poetry readings from luminaries like Lemn Sissay, as well as short film screenings, a cocktail bar, a lantern making workshop, various craft stalls and even (no kidding!), a rubber duck racing contest.

It’s definitely hip and, providing the weather gods are kind, it might put New Islington on the cultural map.
