OLDHAM'S buildings, businesses and open spaces were surveyed by
Blue Coat School pupils during a geography exercise. The GCSE
students looked at how the landscape changes from the town centre
to Delph - and they saw the Advertiser's new office at Yorkshire
Street. And nice, sunny weather made their ambitious task a bit
easier. Learning mentor Steve Kessell explained: "We're looking at
the ages of buildings, commercial districts and where greenery
starts. The pupils are identifying different styles and uses of
buildings. We're working throughout the day and hope to reach Delph
by about 2pm." Similar surveys have been done in previous years and
other pupils from the school have been out and about Oldham over
the last few days. Mr Kessell, of Watersheddings Street, said this
was his first academic year at Blue Coat School. "It's the kind of
work I've always wanted to get into. I don't have a formal teaching
qualification, but my role is to assist the pupils. If there are
any barriers that hinder their studies - whether academic or social
- we try to help.
"It's a great way of getting to know the kids and I work across all
the different subjects. it's really interesting work." Speaking
about the outdoors activity, geography teacher Ian Hatrick added:
"There are all sorts of issues relating to this survey, but the
focus is on planning use and environmental pressures. We'll produce
maps, charts and graphs, illustrating our findings, and write-up
reports to accompany these."
STAFF at a Hollinwood pub are organising a charity fun day to raise cash for the Kirsty Howard appeal. It will be held at the Streetbridge Inn on Roman Road on Monday, August 25. The Kirsty Howard Appeal was set up to raise funds for the Francis House children's hospice. The fun day is a family event with a tombola, raffles, an auction and lucky dip. The entertainment continues in the evening for the grown-ups. The pub hope to attract a celebrity guest for the big day. To sponsor the event, call the Streetbridge Inn on 683 4017.
A BUSINESS in Coppice got a helping hand from an environmental group with fencing and drainage work - and the improvements will now mean two new jobs in the area. Stone Suppliers Brymas, on Lee Street, had begun renovations when Ground-work stepped in to help. A new welded mesh security fence has been erected and the yard has been resurfaced - so the site is now safe and secure.
CHILDREN with special needs can benefit from dedicated swimming lessons. Glodwick Pool will close to the general public every Wednesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm to allow the special lessons to take place. An Oldham Council swimming teacher will be on hand to give parents advice. For information, contact Lisa Stacey, Community Sports Development Officer on 911 3050.
