MARKET Street, Shaw in the mid-1960s
MARKET Street, Shaw in the mid-1960s

How times have changed ... as Market Street can testify

30/ 6/2003

THIS photograph shows the changing face of Market Street, Shaw and dates from about 1964.

The shop premises on the left of the picture have taken on the bland, concrete and aluminium appearance that characterised retail properties from this time onwards, even in the smaller town and suburbs of the district. The small branch of Woolworths can be seen - the third shop from the left.

Some of the prices from almost 40 years ago can be seen on the posters in the supermarket window. Butter at 3s 11d and rice pudding at 9d per tin - halcyon days! But of course this good value is merely an illusion as few people earned more than £20 per week.
